Durham University is more than 600 years old and is the third oldest university after Oxford and Cambridge. Like them it has a collegiate system. It is a member of the Russell Group of British research universities and Durham consistently places in the top ten in rankings of universities in the United Kingdom. The 2018 Complete University Guide ranks Durham 6th overall, The Guardian University Guide 2018 ranks Durham 4th overall, and the 2018 The Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide ranks Durham 5th overall.

Successful completion of the foundation program will lead to progression to an undergraduate degree at the university.
